Do printables need an unedited photo on Etsy? The 2026 photo rules for digital downloads

Last checked 29 October 2026 · 5 minute read

The short answer

No. Under Etsy's listing image rules (checked 29 October 2026), a printable or template doesn't need an unedited photo of a printed copy. Etsy says that if a digital download has a visual component, such as a printable or template, the listing must include a preview of the actual content buyers will receive.

The unedited-photo rule applies to most physical items: at least one photo of the actual item against a real background, not edited in any way. Craft patterns, recipes and similar items are stricter. They need at least one real, unedited photo of something made using the product, and AI-generated images can't be the only images showing the finished result. Digital items with no visual part can use representative imagery, including AI images, if it doesn't mislead buyers.

Mockups and AI edits are still allowed in your other images as long as they accurately show what the buyer receives. Make your first image the clearest, most accurate one, and disclose any AI use in how the item was made.

This is a plain-English summary for printable and digital download sellers, not legal advice. Etsy's own policy pages are the authority, and Printable Pilot isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Etsy.

The short answer for printable sellers

When Etsy announced its AI update on 22 October 2026, the headline most sellers saw was "Etsy requires unedited photos". For a printable, that doesn't mean printing your planner and photographing it on a desk. Etsy's help page on listing images says:

"If your item has a visual component, such as a printable or template, include a preview of the actual content buyers will receive."

So the job is to show the real pages, sheets or files the buyer downloads.

What Etsy means by an "unedited photo"

Etsy says it "requires at least one unedited photo for most items", and that "an unedited photo should show the actual item against a real background and must not be edited or changed in any way. Some exceptions may apply depending on the types of items you sell." Digital downloads are one of those types, which is why printables get the preview rule instead.

The rule for each type of digital listing

Etsy's own words, checked 29 October 2026. Find your row:

Listing typeWhat Etsy says the images need
Printables and templates"Include a preview of the actual content buyers will receive."
Digital, no visual part"You may use representative imagery, including AI-generated images, as long as it doesn't mislead buyers about what they're purchasing."
Patterns, recipes and similar"Include at least one real, unedited photo of something made using your product. AI-generated images cannot be the only images used to show the finished result."
Print-on-demandA stock photo mockup is allowed "if the stock photo's owner has authorised its use".

Printables and templates

Planners, worksheets, wall art files, spreadsheets, invitations and editable templates all have a visual part, so show the real content: screenshots of the actual pages, the tabs of the actual spreadsheet, the actual design. Etsy doesn't say how many preview images you need, so we won't either.

Digital items with no visual component

For something like an audio file, Etsy allows representative imagery, including AI images, provided it doesn't mislead buyers about what they're buying.

Patterns, recipes and similar guides

These are stricter: you need a real, unedited photo of something made using your product, such as the finished crochet piece or the cooked dish. Etsy also no longer allows AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions. Read our guide to Etsy's rule for patterns, recipes and guides for the detail.

Print-on-demand

If you also sell print-on-demand items, Etsy says a stock photo mockup is fine if the stock photo's owner has authorised its use.

Can I still use mockups and AI edits?

Yes, in your other images. Etsy says "you can use photo editing tools in your other listing photos", as long as the edits don't misrepresent what buyers will receive. Its AI section says you can use AI-assisted tools to crop, resize, adjust lighting or colour, or change backgrounds. A mockup of your planner on a desk is fine if it shows the pages the buyer actually gets.

Etsy's best practice: "Make your first listing photo the clearest, most realistic representation of the item buyers will receive." For a printable, that usually means the real preview goes first and the styled mockups come after.

AI-made printables and disclosure

Etsy says it will continue to allow AI-generated art "when sellers play a clear creative role in what they create and are transparent about their process." You must disclose when an item is created using AI, and you can't present AI-generated work as handmade or entirely your own creation.

A note on our own product: Printable Pilot's AI prompts are for making your own original designs, with disclosure.

If Etsy flags your images or a buyer reports you

Etsy says that if it detects AI-generated images when you create a listing, it will give you tips to meet its photo expectations. It is also adding a "Report this item to Etsy" reason for misleading AI imagery, and says that in the beginning these reports "won't result in immediate enforcement action." If a listing is removed, you can appeal through the Policy violations page in Shop Manager.

A 5-minute check of your printable listings

  • Is there a preview of the actual pages or files the buyer receives?
  • Is your first image the clearest, most accurate one?
  • Does any mockup show something that isn't included in the download?
  • Is any AI use in making the item disclosed?
  • For pattern or recipe listings: is there a real, unedited photo of something made with it?
