How to write Etsy tags that get found

Updated 17 October 2026 · 6 minute read

Tags are one of the main ways Etsy search matches your listing to what a buyer types. You get 13 of them, and most sellers waste half. Here's how to make every one count, with a worked example for a printable.

The short version

  • Use all 13 tags.
  • Make each one a phrase a buyer would actually type, not a single word.
  • Don't spend tags on things your category and attributes already say.
  • Cover different angles: what it is, who it's for, the occasion, the style and how it's used.
  • Keep your title short and clear, and let your tags carry the extra phrases.

The rules

Every listing can have up to 13 tags, and each tag can be up to 20 characters, including spaces. A tag can be a phrase of several words, and that's usually what you want.

1. Use all 13

Etsy's own advice is to add 13 tags to every listing, because each empty slot is a search you could have matched and didn't. If you're stuck at eight, the sections below will get you to 13.

2. Write phrases buyers actually type

Etsy recommends multi-word phrases in natural language over single words. "Planner" alone matches an ocean of listings. "adhd planner pdf" matches someone who knows what they want and is ready to buy.

Think about how your buyer would describe the problem, not how you'd describe the product. A buyer searches "time blocking", not "structured productivity layout".

3. Don't repeat your category and attributes

Etsy says the category you choose and the attributes you fill in (such as colour, occasion or holiday) also act like tags. If your listing is already in the planners category with the holiday attribute set to Christmas, a tag that just says "christmas" adds little. Fill in every attribute that fits, then spend your 13 tags on phrases the attributes can't express.

4. Cover different angles

Thirteen tags that all say "adhd planner" in slightly different ways only reach one kind of search. Spread them across the different ways people look for the same thing:

A worked example

Here's a full set of 13 for an undated ADHD daily planner. Every tag is under 20 characters, and no single word dominates.

Notice what's missing: no "printable" on its own, no "planner" on its own, and nothing the category already covers.

5. Keep the title short and let tags do the rest

In April 2026 Etsy updated its title guidance: say clearly what the item is, put the most important details first, and keep it short, roughly under 15 words. You don't need to cram every keyword into the title. That's what your tags, attributes and description are for.

A good pattern for printables: the main thing first, then one or two details that matter to the buyer. For example, "ADHD Daily Planner Printable, Undated, A4 and A5".

6. What not to tag

7. Refresh tags with the seasons

From October to December, lots of buyers are shopping for someone else, so phrases like "gift for teacher" or "stocking stuffer" are worth a slot where they honestly fit. Swap them out in January for "new year planner" or "2027 goals".

Then check what's working. In your Etsy Stats you can see the search terms that brought people to your listings. Keep the tags that bring visits, and replace the ones that never do.
